REFLECTION

Experiences

Advanced typography is a continuation module from typography last semester, I continue to apply what we learned in the last semester in this semester especially for typographic systems exercise and task 3. I felt quite excited and anticipating in the beginning of the module because typography was the most enjoyable module for me in last semester. I think in advanced typography, we can have more imagination, freedom and need to be more expressive and creative while doing the task such as in type and play exercise, I had observed and imagined the letterforms from the image of the stones, and in the task of key artwork, I had to design the wordmark based on my personalities. Throughout all of the exercises and tasks, there are some challenges for sure, but I think these challenges enable me to improve myself in this area. While doing the task, I combined the knowledge that I had learned in this semester and last semester in addition with my creativity. It was a very enlightening module as it still remains my favourite module this semester. This module has allowed me to learn many things where I will remember them so that I can apply in my future and.

Observation

Through this module, I observed that it is important to do visual research based on our direction. I also observed that it is crucial to pay attentions to the details while designing a typeface as small mistakes or imperfections might affect the whole outcome, like in task 2, the stroke has to be thick enough so that the wordmark can be seen even though it is in smaller size. Through the tasks like designing key artwork and typeface, I observed that each individual has their own style in designing, intentionally or unintentionally. As all peers has a unique perspective and personality to their designs, it makes me appreciates the rich tapestry of typographic expression. I also observed that the process of designing a typeface emphasizes the delicate balance between aesthetics and legibility, of course we also need to consider the functions of the artwork.

Findings

The module of advanced typography cultivates a holistic understanding of typography's role in design, encouraging creativity, personal expression, and a keen appreciation for the impact of type on visual communication. With the knowledge I gained and findings throughout the tasks, I found that the tasks have not only enriched my design sensibilities but also heightened my awareness of the impact of typographic forms, choices on user experience and message conveyance. I also understand that in each task, every step that we had been through contributes to the thoroughness of the whole artwork, every step allows us to examine, observed, refine, improve our artwork continuously so that we can create an outcome that fulfilled each aspect like aesthetic, readability, creativity and more.
