INSTRUCTIONS

Project 1: Proposal Development

In the first project, we are required to brainstorm and develop a project proposal. The proposal should include a project overview (title, problem statement, proposed idea, USP), project specifications (format, duration, genre, visual style), team roles and responsibilities, project delivery timeline. For animation project, we have to include logline, synopsis, story theme, characters and world descriptions in the slide.

Week 1 / 4.2.2025 & 5.2.2025

In this week, we were briefed on the module and how will the projects be carried out. This module is dedicated to the final year project and will be divided into two phases: Major Project 1 and Major Project 2.  After that, we divided ourselves based on our specialisations. For my specialisation, digital animation, we will merge with entertainment design and immersive design. Then, we started form groups with 4 members.

Group Members:

  • Adriena Tan Yan Zi
  • Chan Wan Qing
  • Sun Chaoran
  • Thanaphorn Daensaad

In the tutorial class, we sorted all the groups out and have a more detailed brief on the project for our specialisations. Then, our group started to have a discussion on our direction and story ideas. We came up with the general theme of "Perception Vs Reality". We then came up with 4 directions and will research on these 4 direction respectively. After completing the research, we had a group meeting to put all of the information into Miro and presentation slide.

Ideas Proposal - Presentation Slide

During the meeting, we also discussed on our topic preferences out of the 4 topics. We did a poll voting on WhatsApp. Based on the result, we are more keen on idea 1 out of the 4, but we still need to consult with Mr Kamal to see if we can continue with this idea.

Week 2 / 12.2.2025

In week 2, we consulted with Mr Kamal on our the general direction and 4 ideas. We explained each ideas to sir respectively. Mr. Kamal liked both the first and second ideas, but ultimately suggested that we proceed with the first idea and further develop it. Then, sir gave us ideas to improve the storyline. Mr Kamal also gives us feedbacks based on our idea proposal for the techniques and general ideas. The feedbacks are recorded in the "Feedbacks" section. During the consultation, Mr Kamal also suggested on our roles in the group. Since the proposal is due next week, we divided the tasks among ourselves to cover all the necessary components.

Week 2 Tasks (1)

A) Project Overview (Adriena - create slides)

- Project Title
- Problem Statement
- Proposed Idea
- USP

B) Project Specifications

- Output Format (/)
- Duration (/)
- Genre (/)
- Visual Style (Chaoran - character, world references)

C) Team Roles and Responsibilities (/)

D) Project Timeline (WQ)

E) Story Idea (Han + Together)

During the end of the week, we had an meeting to finalise our story idea. We also divided the work as we need to finalise our project proposal. I came out with a project timeline for major project 1.

Project Timeline

Week 2 Tasks (2)

1. Script (Han)

2. Logline, Synopsis, Story Theme, Story Arc (Adriena)

3. Character & World Description (with Moodboard) (Wanqing)

4. Character Sketches & Environment Sketches (Chaoran)

Week 3 / 19.2.2025

After the meeting, I started to analyse the character and world in the story. I decided the characters' age and also listed out their appearance, personalities. I also identified their want and their needs in the story as well as each character's internal and external conflicts.

Character Descriptions

After coming out with the personalities, I started to find references as the moodboard. I suggested some ideas on their colour palette, facial expressions, poses and others and put all the references into out Miro board.

World Description

After we finished on our own part, we put all of the information into our slide and proposed it to Mr Kamal.

In week 3, we presented our group proposal with more details including the project overview, project specifications and story idea to sir. We came out with the story arc, logline, synopsis, characters and world descriptions with sketches of them.

In the consultation, Mr Kamal advised us to add in some current issues and examples in our explanation of the project in problem statement and unique selling point to make our idea stand out. Mr Kamal mentioned that we should find more references on the characters.

Therefore, we had an meeting to amend the problem statement, theme and so on. We also find the references together so that our groupmate can sketch on the characters or environment more accurately according to the settings.

FEEDBACKS

Week 2 / Project 1

Techniques:

  • Best to have 3D character
  • 2D - drawing frame by frame, need to make sure the drawing is good and consistent
  • 3D background - big enough, can show multiple shot

Target Audiences:

Instead of 18, try to make it 15 since after 15, their ways of thinking will be different [12-15 age group]

Theme:

Relate with current situation - social media - encourage people to check the truth/facts first

Ideas:

Idea 1 - positive, not scary, educational (2 kids perspective..?)
Idea 2 - can make it more local (eg. chicken leg house)

Week 3 / Project 1

Problem Statement: Add in what is currently happening, what we think about this in Malaysia

Unique Selling Point: Product Positioning - Put in some similar animations / graphics novel as references

Act 1: - Show that the spirit is not human (eg. the spirit can't pick up things)

Theme: Add the big theme (Perception vs Reality) and explain (human connection / remembrance), if have any sub-theme, can add in

Characters:
- Liang and Yun a bit too young, 10 y/o will be enough - young boy can see the spirit
- Transition of the Spirit between ghost form and spirit form should connect - can't see the connection for now
- Coco suits our story
- Luka father can be the reference of the spirit
- Pendent - if it's important, set up in Act 1

Week 4 / Project 1

  • We shouldering develop more in the reference
  • We can alter the story as we go
  • Specify why these shapes are used to develop these character sketches, make sure it is consistent and not contrasting to the world
  • Specify why this is Malaysian base, what makes it unique
  • How do we want to animate this, we need to think about where we want to use 2D and where we want to include 3D
  • What kind of rendering style we want to look at
  • We have to start looking at composition of this animation
  • Make sure it always goes back to the objective
  • Can focus on the transformation of the spirit
  • Write the things that I know

REFLECTION

For me, the beginning of the project has confused me a bit since we are doing our final year project as a group. But, quickly, we had to get into the situation since it's a short semester where we only had 7 weeks to complete the tasks. So, in the first week, we started to do contextual research on the topics we came up with and to think of a (few) storyline(s) on the respective topics we had chosen and researched on. Since our group members are all specialising in animation, so we had decided to go for a final outcome of a short animation. Fortunately, after discussing with Mr Kamal, sir approved on one of our topic so we can continue to focus on the topic and refine the storyline. We had only roughly 1 and a half week left until the deadline of the project. So, we quickly divided the work and started to work on our part. From here, it is more like what we had done in film studies and cinematography as we need to come up with the story arc, logline, synopsis, character and world description and more. So, it is what we are quite familiar with. However, I was initially confused about certain aspects, such as the unique selling point and the visual style of the animation. I originally thought that a USP was more relevant to a product. However, after consulting with Sir, we gained more clarity on how to approach these sections. So after the consultation, we refined some of the parts of our work together and presented it.
