Final Project: Character Modeling
In the final project, we are required to produce an organic 3D model of a character from a model sheet. We may search the image reference and model sheet of our chosen character. We have to model the character using polygon tools and techniques based on what we have learnt. If required, we need to apply the right material and texture to give its appearance. Lastly, apply three points lighting and render. Similarly to previous projects, we have to use Eevee or Cycle rendering for final output.
Requirements:
- Output size: 1280 x 720
- Format: .png
- Rendering engine: Eevee or Cycles
Model Sheet
First, I decided to model the character, Doraemon. Then, I searched for the model sheet for Doraemon. After that, I cropped out the front view and side view from the model sheet and imported them into Blender.
Blender
Starting with modeling the head, I used cube and subdivide by level 2. Then, I used move tool and scale in and out to adjust the model according to the front view and side view.
Then, I modeled the cylinder with 16 sides so that it matches with the faces of the head. I used loop cut to divide the cylinder. Then, by using move tool and scale in/out, I adjusted it according to the model sheet. I used bridge edge loops tool to connect the head and body.
After that, I modeled the legs and arms of the Doraemon. First, I used cylinder with 8 sides to model the legs. Similarly, I used move tool and scale in/out to adjust the legs. Then, I used cube tool and subdivide it and connect it with the legs after adjusting the shape. Next, I modeled the arms using cylinder and cube after subdivide it by level 1. Then, I connected both arms and both legs to the body.
After modeling the head, body, arms and legs, I continue to model the details. I used knife tool and extrude tool to cut out the shape of the white parts of Doraemon and also its pocket. Then, by adding cylinder, I model the necklace. Then, I model the bell on the necklace with cube with subdivision of level 1. I also added the nose and tail by subdividing a cube shape.
Lastly, I used knife tool to cut out the shape of its eyes. This is the most challenging part for me as the eyes are connected with the white part, so the eyes look weird with a crease on them. So, I tried to extrude them and use move tool to fix this problem. After fixing them, I used knife tool to cut out the shape of the pupils. Since I don't want to leave the faces as n-gon, I joined the vertices together so that the faces remained as triangle or quadrilateral shapes. After completing the modeling part, I applied subdivision of level 2 to the body, bell, tail and nose, then applied shade smooth.
After that, I proceeded to colour the character model. First, I coloured the main body to blue, then I selected the faces of white colour part and apply different materials on them. I didn't apply texture on it as I think there isn't any special texture on its body.
After colouring, I added a plane and extrude the sides. I added colour on the plane. Then, I adjusted the positions of the light. I put one point light near the model and adjusted the brightness. But I found that the back of the model looks a bit dark, so I added another spot light on top and adjusted its brightness and radius. At last, I render the final outcome with render engine, Cycles.

FEEDBACKS
Week 12 / Final Project
Specific Feedbacks:
Looks okay. Can start to colour the character.
Week 14 / Final Project
Specific Feedbacks:
Looks good. Can improved by making the eyes a bit shinier, but not too much, if not it will be too contrast with the material of the body.
REFLECTION
In this final project, we need to produce an organic 3D model of a character. Since we did a similar exercise of modeling Patrick in class, so I followed most of the step while modeling the main body of Doraemon. The exercise allowed me to learn the basic steps and finish the main body easier in the beginning. In this exercise, I struggled more on modeling the details, like the white part of its body and face, especially the eyes. While modeling the character, I apply subdivision after completing each part so that I can clean up the wireframe if there is any parts that have problems. I feel like this project is quite fun, maybe it's because I'm modeling a character I like, and the character is quite easier to model.
