PROJECT 1 [40%]

In this project, we are required to design a portrait about ourselves which contemplates on our life experiences.

Visual References

To start this project, I did a mind map about myself. I tried to list out as much as possible because I still did not know how should I portrait myself. I decided to find some inspiration online from Google. However, after I found some examples of self-portrait, I was still lost, I just did not know how to portray myself through a design. Therefore, I tried to reflect on myself, like how am I doing recently, what activities/things that I do the most recently. And I found out that recently, I like to think a lot, like imagining, thinking about some scenarios that didn’t happen. So, I decided to make a self-portrait with the post of me thinking.

After I made my direction clear, I tried to decide a concept/theme for my self-portrait. I decided to use graffiti/street art as the concept/theme to my self-portrait, combining with my own style for the drawing of the character, which is me, to come out with the final design. The reason I thought about using graffiti/street art is because I went back to my hometown, which is Ipoh and I saw those murals in the street in Ipoh. I was inspired and I also came out with a few ideas after I recalled back what I had seen before from TV programmes, news, music videos and others that are related to the theme as references (images above) for this project. This theme could also represent Ipoh, my hometown as Ipoh is for its mural.

Ideation

Initially, I found a picture of myself in my phone gallery, where it shows that I’m thinking. As this is a self-portrait, I emphasize on myself as the main object in this design. I added things about me, such as what I like and my identity, mainly about the quotes of my favourite things because I feel like these quotes explained what I like, my mindset. I placed it at the left bottom as I’m looking at left side and I placed the quotes/logos behind my head, just like I was thinking about these things. I designed the font of those quotes according the feelings I felt from them, and I wanted it to look a little bit messy like the reference.

However, this was just an ideation. It did look too compact as there is no blank spaces in my opinion.

Prototype

After that, I decided to come out with a quote that speaks to me the most from the design in ideation. I came out with 2 prototype designs of my self-portrait as I was not so sure about the first one. For the first design, there is contrast between the brick background and me from the aspect of colour/saturation, this leads the audience to put their focus on the person, but the words have less attraction compared to the person.

For the second design, I placed the person in the center, and the quote at back. In this design, I used the principle of balance for the person and the quote. I used black background to make a contrast between the person and quote (blue and red) so that the audience can see both the person and the quote. Besides, the blue and red colours with the black background represent a clear image of what I wanted to become.

Final Design

In the final design, I amended a very small part of the words, making it at the center as the previous one is more on the left.

'JUST DO IT YO!!'

Behind the meaning of this design is that I feel like sometimes, I am overthinking about what will happen in the future; sometimes, I will hesitate about making a move forward; and sometimes, I was afraid to have a new beginning, a new chapter of my life, for example from high school to university. In this design, I wanted to encourage myself to step out from my comfort zone and just do it, whatever it is. Many of the times, I needed this quote to motivate myself to stop overthinking and move on from the past so that I can become a better me.

REFLECTION

From this project, I was given a chance to design for myself and reflect on myself. Through this project, I feel like I have learned to apply the design principles to a design, and study on the composition of the design. This project also helps me to explore on different ways of designing self-portrait. This project also allows me to express a message from me to me through a self-portrait design by reflecting on myself. From the design principles I have learnt, I was able create a design and analyse it little by little although I’m still inadequate. It was fun to evaluate and analyse my own work and improve them with the knowledge I had in design principles.
