Exercise 1A: Physical Collage Design
Exercise 1B: Digital Collage
Exercise 2: Digital Imaging

1A. Physical Collage Design

In this activity, we are required to cut out some graphics, images, words from the magazines and arrange the elements into a collage. The aim is to develop a theme/idea with layers of images with design principles, as well as familiar with the fundamental of composition. Through this activity, we are able to understand a basic compositing fundamental techniques using collage design.

I started with collecting magazines based on the graphics and the typography of the magazines. After that, I cut out all the graphics and typography which I think I can use in the collage design. Then, I arranged the elements onto a background from the magazine, I tried to chose elements that can match which each other based on my theme. I arranged the elements into 3 versions of collage.

Lastly, we will choose the best composition out of the 3 ideations as the final submission.

Final Submission:

1B. Digital Collage Design

In this project, we are required to download the images given by Mr Fauzi and edit them using Adobe Photoshop, for examples, removing background, selecting objects by different tools. Similar to Project 1A, we are going to create 3 digital collages with different compositions from the images we downloaded in a vertical A4 canvas size in Photoshop.

I cropped out the objects with the methods and tools demonstrated by Mr Fauzi and came out with 3 compositions:

Final Submission:

I chose the 3rd one as the best composition as this has a clear focal point, which is the building. The sizes of all objects are different so we can differentiate the focal point in the first sight. In this collage, it looks like the people is walking into the building and the fish is looking at them, the pattern in the background is like water waves caused by the fish. In this exercise, I have learned to crop out the objects from the original images. I’ve learned to make compositions by adjusting the size of the object, arranging them into an image with a storyline.

2. Digital Imaging

In digital imaging exercises, we use Adobe Photoshop as tool for doing digital imaging, compost different images into one final output.

Exercise 2A: Heart Mansion

Part A:

Follow the demo video posted in slide and edit Shazam into the background picture given.

Outcome:

We also tried to edit our own image into this background using the same method.

Part B:

Outcome:

As my the colours of my outfits are quite similar to the background, I feel like myself had blended into the wall.

Exercise 2B: Recolouring B&W Photo

Part A:

In exercise 2, we need to learn to recolour black and white photo using Adobe Photoshop.

Original photo:

After recolouring:

Part B:

In the second part, we learned about a more advanced version of recolouring black and white images.

Original Photo:

What makes this black and white portrait harder to recolour is that the details of the portrait, which is the hair, as we need to make it as natural as possible.

Outcome:

We also need to recolour one black and white photo based on the method we learned. We had to choose one black and white photo provided and recolour it. We need to find references for the hair colour, skin colour and so on when recolouring it.

Exercise 1: Collage Design

Physical and Digital Collage

From this exercise, I had learned to arrange the elements according to the composition. The biggest difference of physical collage and digital collage is that we can adjust the sizes of the elements in digital collage using Adobe Photoshop.

Exercise 2: Digital Imaging

Heart Mansion

I think photoshop is fun but the process is quite complicated as we have to take care of every details. I think the hardest part in this exercise is adjusting the brightness, contrast, saturation and more of the image of the man as we need to make it match with the background.

Recolouring B&W Photo

Through this activity, I realised that there can be a lot of possibilities based on our imagination to recolour black and white images. I think recolouring black and white pictures is a fun activity as we can manipulate the photo based on our own imaginations.
