WEEK 4 (27.4.2023)

Lecture

In the fourth week, we learned about adjustment layer and filters in Adobe Photoshop. Adjustment layers in Photoshop is basically an editing tool by adding colours and adjusting tones into the images without changing the pixels of the images.

1. Brightness & Contrast

  • Brightness slider: adjusting highlights
  • Contrast slider: adjusting shadows
2. Level
  • Adjusting levels of shadows, mid-tones and highlights
3. Curves
  • Adjust the entire tonal range of an image
4. Exposure
  • Adjust exposure levels with 3 sliders: Exposure, Offset, Gamma
5. Selective Colour
  • Selectively modifies the amount of a primary color without modifying the other primary colors
Tutorial

During tutorial class, Mr Fauzi showed some demo videos about how to use the vital tools in Adobe Photoshop such as match lighting, adjustment layers and filters. He taught us the function of the tools and showed us the icons so that we are able to familiarise ourselves with the tools in Photoshop. Mr Fauzi explained that there are many different methods to do a work in Photoshop, so we should find a way that suits us the most.

Practical

In practical class, we are required to choose the best composition in our last task, digital collage and use it to practice what we learned today, which is adjustment layer and filters. We discussed with Mr Fauzi to choose the best composition out of the 3 compositions we did.

I chose the 3rd one as the best composition as this has a clear focal point, which is the building. After that I started to edit this image with adjustment layer in Adobe Photoshop. I edited this image with different adjustments, which are colour balance, hue/saturations and levels. I tried out different adjustments as I wanted to find out what are the differences.

This how I tried with different adjustment layers seperately. In the final outcome, as I feel like the original image has a higher saturation, I tried to apply a cooler tone by adjusting the levels, colour balance and hue/saturation. I tried to adjust the filter layers one by one and amend them together at last as I don’t know how each adjustment layer makes the filter difference.

Final outcome:
