Week 2 (Lecture, Workshop)
WEEK 2 (13.4.2023)
Lecture
In the second lecture, we learned about 'Introduction to Composition'. Composition means the arrangement of elements within a work of art. This lecture is closely related to our project 1, which is collage design.
A) Introduction to Basic Composition
- Focal Point
- Helps audiences to settle their eyes on the important pieces of the design
- Scale & Hierarchy
- Scale is used to help communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements - Balance the Elements
- Think of each element as having a ‘weight’ to it - White Spaces
- Helps the design to breathe
- The process of dividing an image into thirds, using two horizontal and two vertical lines.
- The Rule of
Thirds is a way to:
- Use composition techniques that are in line with what’s naturally pleasing to the eye.- Creatively use negative spaces
- Create conversation between the subject and background
C) Golden Ratio
- A mathematical ratio; when used in a design, it fosters organic and natural-looking compositions that are aesthetically pleasing to the eyes.
- Golden Ratio creates a sense of beauty through harmony and proportion and provides a sense of artistry in design.
- A useful guideline for determining dimensions of the layout.
D) Composition [Framing & Cropping]
- Cropping and framing refers to how your subject is positioned within the confines or edges of your photograph — how much of the subject and background you see and what is cut off.
In the session of tutorial and practical, we are required to cut out the elements from our magazines and create 3 different styles of collage design using the materials.
I tried to make as many styles as I can and choose the better ones. Before arranging the elements, we are reminded to put the composition in mind so that we can come out with good collage designs.
My collage design ideas:
At the end, we are required to submit the best one of these collage design for our first project.
